Rena Kanokogi (1935-2009) was a pioneering figure in women's judo in the United States. In 1959, she competed in an all-male judo competition at the YMCA in New York City, disguising herself as a man in order to participate. She won the competition, but was later discovered and disqualified. This event was a turning point in the fight for gender equality in martial arts. Kanokogi went on to become a coach and advocate for women's judo, ultimately helping to secure its inclusion in the Olympic Games. She was posthumously inducted into the International Judo Federation Hall of Fame in 2019.
